"A dream come true": Sanju Samson on playing with MS Dhoni & Chennai Super Kings

Samson noted the support he received from the Chennai crowd during the World Cup was "overwhelming," and he feels a deep responsibility to repay that faith.

The 'Yellow Army' has a new hero. Following a blockbuster trade that sent Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran to Rajasthan Royals, Sanju Samson has officially transitioned from Jaipur to Chennai. Speaking in Thiruvananthapuram on Monday, the Kerala-born batting sensation expressed his "eager" anticipation for IPL 2026, where he will fulfill a career-long dream of playing alongside MS Dhoni.

Samson arrives at Chepauk at the peak of his powers, fresh off a T20 World Cup triumph where his clutch performances; most notably a match-winning 97 against the West Indies, helped India reclaim global dominance.

Trade of the season:

Chennai Super Kings’ decision to move on from franchise legends like Jadeja and Curran marks a massive departure from their traditional "solidity-first" approach. After finishing at the bottom of the table in 2025, the management has pivoted toward the explosive brilliance of Samson to ignite a stagnant top order.

I am really excited to be part of CSK. I had spoken to Dhoni over the phone... This will be different as I will be spending close to two months with Dhoni in CSK and I am eagerly looking forward to it. It will be a great opportunity for me to observe him from close quarters and learn from him.

Chennai's new favorite son?

Chennai has a long-standing tradition of adopting outsiders as their own, from "Thala" Dhoni to the cinematic "Superstar" Rajinikanth. For Samson, a self-confessed Rajini fan who famously visited Poes Garden in 2023, the move feels like destiny.

Samson noted that the support he received from the Chennai crowd during the World Cup was "overwhelming," and he feels a deep responsibility to repay that faith. At CSK, he will play without the burden of captaincy, allowing him to focus purely on the aggressive, match-winning role the franchise has lacked.

World Cup heroics:

Reflecting on India’s sixth U-19 World Cup title (where he mentored the juniors) and the senior T20 win, Samson identified his unbeaten 97 as his finest hour.

  • Pressure: Chasing a massive target while losing wickets at the other end.

  • Maturity: Samson "tempered his aggression" to control the chase, a trait CSK fans hope to see at the spinning tracks of Chepauk.

  • Celebration: His signature prayer on one knee has become as iconic in Indian cricket as the Dhoni helicopter shot.

IPL 2026 outlook

  • Coaching core: Samson will be mentored by the trio of MS Dhoni, Stephen Fleming, and Mike Hussey.

  • Transition: Fans are already calling the shift from Dhoni to Samson the transition from "Thala" to "Chettan."

  • Venue boost: Samson famously ended his lean patch at Chepauk last season, scoring off the second ball and never looking back.

  • Release pressure: By releasing Jadeja for Samson, CSK has signaled that the 24-year-old (wait, the text says 21 years later in 2023, he is roughly 30-31) is the pillar of their future.
