Tim Seifert smashes ton in potential IPL audition as Shaheen Afridi removed from bowling

This milestone, combined with his current strike rate of 182.14 in this innings, underscores his reliability and explosive potential in the shortest format.

Tim Seifert timed his return to form to perfection, smashing the first century of the BBL season just hours before the IPL 2026 auction is set to begin in Abu Dhabi. The New Zealand wicketkeeper-batter blasted a 56-ball 102 to power the Melbourne Renegades to a 14-run victory over the Brisbane Heat on Sunday.

Returning from a six-week injury layoff due to a broken finger, Seifert showed no signs of rust, clattering nine fours and six sixes at the GMHBA Stadium. His innings not only secured the win but served as a loud statement to IPL franchises scouting for last-minute impact players.

With a base price set at ₹1.50 crore, Seifert has drastically improved his probability of attracting bids during today's auction. Although he has had brief, limited stints with Kolkata Knight Riders (2021) and Delhi Capitals (2022), he has often gone unsold in recent years. This knock positions him as a high-value acquisition for teams seeking an explosive backup wicketkeeper-opener.

His ability to accelerate strike rates in the powerplay and handle pace makes him a budget-friendly alternative to marquee names, potentially sparking interest from franchises needing to fill overseas slots without breaking the bank.

The century enhances an already robust T20 résumé. Seifert has now amassed 6,698 runs across 293 matches at a strike rate of 134.63, including four centuries and 32 fifties. By reaching triple figures on Sunday, he became only the second player in Renegades history after Aaron Finch, to score a BBL ton.

This statistical milestone, combined with his current strike rate of 182.14 in this innings, underscores his reliability and explosive potential in the shortest format, traits highly coveted in the high-scoring environment of the IPL.

While Seifert headlined the match, the contest was packed with drama, including a disastrous debut for Pakistan star Shaheen Shah Afridi. The pacer was removed from the attack by umpires in the 18th over for bowling two dangerous waist-high full tosses, finishing with figures of 0-43.

Conversely, Seifert found excellent support from 19-year-old Oliver Peake, who scored a rapid 57 off 29 balls. Together, they stitched a 121-run partnership that lifted the Renegades to a daunting 212-5, the highest T20 total ever recorded at the venue.

Brisbane Heat mounted a spirited chase, led by Colin Munro’s 55 and a late, fierce assault from Jimmy Peirson, who scored 50 off 22 balls. However, they fell short at 198-8, with Renegades captain Will Sutherland closing out the game in the final over.

As the Renegades celebrate a winning start to their campaign, Seifert now waits to see if his on-field heroics translate into a lucrative deal at the auction table in Abu Dhabi.
