Amid Amazon’s new five-day in-office work mandate, a former Amazon Vice President has shared insights on why returning to the office can feel “worth it.” This perspective comes as CEO Andy Jassy enforces a full return-to-office policy starting January 2, 2025, citing the need for deeper collaboration, innovation, and cultural strengthening.

Amazon’s CEO Andy Jassy has been vocal about the benefits of in-office work. In his memo to employees, Jassy highlighted that teams working together in person tend to be more collaborative, connected, and innovative. He also noted that the last 15 months of hybrid work strengthened their belief in the advantages of physical presence.
The policy has faced resistance from some employees, with protests over earlier hybrid mandates. However, Jassy remains firm, stating that the move is essential for Amazon to "operate like the world’s largest startup" by maintaining agility, urgency, and a strong culture.
The former VP acknowledged that returning to the office will require adjustments for many workers who have structured their lives around remote work since the pandemic. Balancing personal commitments with a five-day commute may be challenging for some employees.
Amazon’s decision reflects a broader trend among major corporations rolling back remote work policies as they aim to rebuild pre-pandemic workplace dynamics. While hybrid work remains popular among employees globally, companies like Amazon believe full-time in-office work is critical for long-term growth and innovation.
