Apple has officially rolled out macOS Sequoia 15.6, marking the sixth and likely final major update before the upcoming debut of macOS Tahoe. This release is now available for all Macs compatible with macOS 15 and can be downloaded through the Software Update panel in System Settings or System Preferences.
The update addresses a significant Apple Configurator and Finder issue, where some devices couldn’t be restored from DFU mode, leading to failed device recovery and extra Apple Store visits. This fix resolves a major pain point for IT administrators and users frequently restoring Apple devices.
With over 70 individual security vulnerabilities patched, this release is among the most critical security updates in recent macOS history. Apple confirmed that, to date, none of the addressed vulnerabilities are known to have been exploited in the wild.
In addition to bug and security fixes, macOS Sequoia 15.6 brings general stability enhancements, ensuring smoother operation across supported Macs.
Unlike previous Sequoia updates which introduced Apple Intelligence features, iPhone Mirroring, redesigned apps, and new creative tools version 15.6 is intentionally “light on new features”. Apple’s development focus has shifted to the next-generation “macOS Tahoe,” with Sequoia now receiving only essential maintenance releases.
All Macs running macOS Sequoia 15 are eligible for the 15.6 update. You can check compatibility and manually trigger the update via System Settings > General > Software Update.
With the release of macOS Sequoia 15.6, Apple’s primary focus turns to macOS Tahoe, with a public launch anticipated later in 2025. Sequoia will likely see just one more update (15.7) for critical support before entering long-term maintenance mode. Users on legacy Intel Macs should be aware that Tahoe will not support several models currently running Sequoia.
