Apple has reportedly delayed the launch of its first smart glasses to 2027, with an unveiling expected at WWDC 2027 and a commercial release later that year, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. The report says Apple extended development to further refine the hardware and software, while placing a strong emphasis on privacy features for its camera-equipped wearable.
The report comes amid broader industry discussions around privacy and smart glasses. Earlier this year, Meta faced scrutiny after reports emerged regarding the handling of data used to train artificial intelligence systems, including footage associated with Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses. Apple is reportedly placing significant emphasis on privacy as it develops its own wearable device.
Bloomberg reported that Apple has explored multiple hardware configurations, including versions with and without cameras. One option under consideration reportedly allows cameras to analyse the surrounding environment for AI-powered features without necessarily functioning as conventional photo or video cameras.
The smart glasses are also expected to include:
Speakers and microphones for hands-free calls and media playback
Siri integration
AI-powered visual intelligence features
Multiple frame styles and colour options
An expected price range of $200 to $500
The report added that Apple is not expected to include an augmented reality display in the first-generation product.
Apple's reported entry into the smart glasses market comes as privacy remains one of the biggest concerns surrounding AI-powered wearable devices. Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses have faced criticism from privacy advocates over the potential for discreet photo and video recording, with concerns that the devices could be used to capture images without the knowledge of those nearby.
