iPhone users might soon have the ability to stream and view videos from Apple TV on screens that support CarPlay. This feature, which has been under development for a while, has been identified in the documentation for Apple's latest iOS 26.4 beta update, providing an initial glimpse of its potential functionality and some of its constraints.
Apple first unveiled the "AirPlay Video in the car" feature at WWDC 2025, but it hasn’t been officially rolled out to users yet. That said, the iOS 26.4 beta reveals early signs of the feature, suggesting Apple could release it to the public soon.
According to the documentation (first spotted by OneJailbreak), “AirPlay video in the car enables people to watch their favourite videos from iPhone right on their CarPlay display when they aren't driving.”
CarPlay now includes a dedicated space, somewhat like an app itself, that would allow users to stream shows and films directly to their car display over AirPlay. It appears to be a step-up over simple mirroring. Users can resume what they were watching on their phone and start new episodes directly from the car's display.
Due to safety and regulatory concerns, the AirPlay Video in the car will only be available when the car is parked, not when someone is driving. Also, not all cars will get this feature automatically. Car manufacturers must update their infotainment systems to support CarPlay and AirPlay video integration.
Apple’s developer documentation suggests the company is laying the groundwork for expanded in-car entertainment via CarPlay, likely arriving with iOS 26.4. According to MacRumors, the iOS 26.4 beta will also introduce support for voice-based conversational apps in CarPlay, though with limited controls. Third-party AI apps may not support wake words like “Hey Siri,” requiring users to open the app manually before use.
