OpenAI ChatGPT has once again proved that India is its favourite market. In a bid to strengthen ties with the country’s rapidly growing AI community, the Sam Altman-led company announced on Tuesday, October 28, that ChatGPT Go will be free for one year for all Indian users signing up from November 4.

This initiative comes on the heels of OpenAI’s first DevDay Exchange event in Bengaluru. As per the offer, both new users and existing ChatGPT Go subscribers will automatically receive an additional 12 months of complimentary access.

ChatGPT Go

According to OpenAI, India was one of the first markets to receive ChatGPT Go, highlighting the company’s increasing focus on the region. Launched in India in August, ChatGPT Go offers a more affordable subscription option designed in response to user demand for accessible advanced AI tools.

The plan includes:

  • Increased message limits

  • Image creation

  • File upload features

These capabilities make ChatGPT Go a versatile choice for both everyday and professional use.

Bengaluru DevDay Exchange

The OpenAI DevDay Exchange is a global developer-focused event series hosted by OpenAI to showcase its latest AI tools, models, and innovations. In 2025, Bengaluru was selected as one of the key locations for this event, scheduled for November 4, marking OpenAI’s first DevDay Exchange in India.

India Emerges as One of ChatGPT’s Biggest Global Markets

OpenAI identifies India as its second-biggest and rapidly expanding user base, with millions, including developers, students, and professionals, using ChatGPT every day.

“Since launching ChatGPT Go in India a few months ago, the adoption and creativity we’ve seen from our users has been inspiring,” Nick Turley, OpenAI's Vice President and Head of ChatGPT, said in talks with Mint.

He also mentioned that the company has been motivated by the positive reception following the launch of ChatGPT Go in India. “Ahead of our first DevDay Exchange event in India, we’re making ChatGPT Go freely available for a year to help more people across India easily access and benefit from advanced AI,” he added.
