The most talked-about AI chatbot and assistant of the moment, Claude AI, has been hit by a global outage, leaving thousands of users unable to access its chat, app, website and login services. The disruption, which marks the second major outage this month, has affected users across multiple countries and disrupted access to Anthropic's chatbot, API and developer tools.
According to outage-tracking platform Downdetector, reports of issues surged sharply around midday on June 18, with complaints crossing 2,500 within a short period. After remaining largely stable over the previous 24 hours, reports spiked suddenly, indicating a widespread service disruption.
Users reported problems across several Claude services, including:
Claude Chat
Claude API
Claude Code
Mobile app
Website
Login services
Lag and latency
Downdetector data shows 60% of complaints were related to Claude Chat, while 26% involved the mobile app. The remaining reports were linked to website access, login failures, API issues and slow performance.
Anthropic confirmed on its status page that it had identified the cause of the outage and was working on a fix. "We have identified the cause of the issue affecting Claude.ai and are working on a fix. We will provide an update as soon as possible," the company said.
However, it has not disclosed what triggered the disruption or provided an estimated timeline for full service restoration.
Social media platforms quickly filled with complaints from users reporting failed conversations, error messages and sign-in problems. The outage has also disrupted developers and businesses that rely on Claude's API and coding tools, raising concerns over reliability as AI assistants become increasingly integrated into everyday workflows.
The latest disruption follows another major outage on June 2, when Claude experienced elevated error rates across its web platform, API services and Claude Code. Users have been advised to monitor Anthropic's status page for further updates while engineers continue working to restore services.
