The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has introduced a significant change in the passport application process, allowing citizens to add their spouse's name to their passport without a marriage certificate. This move simplifies the process by introducing a Joint Photo Declaration (Annexure J) as a valid alternative to the traditional marriage certificate requirement.
The practice of registering marriages varies across India. In states like Maharashtra, marriages are typically registered, while in northern states such as Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Madhya Pradesh, many marriages remain unregistered. This change addresses these disparities, ensuring that couples from regions without formal marriage certificates can easily update their passports.
The new provision reduces bureaucratic hurdles and delays, making it easier for married individuals to include their spouse’s name on their passport.
Annexure J is a self-declaration form signed by both spouses, confirming their marital status and including essential identification details.
Required Documents:
Joint Photograph: A self-attested joint photograph of the couple.
Identification Details: Full names, addresses, and marital status of both spouses.
Signatures: Both spouses must sign the declaration with the place and date clearly mentioned.
ID Proofs: Aadhaar numbers, voter IDs, and passport numbers (if available) for both spouses
The elimination of the marriage certificate requirement reduces processing time and makes the application process more efficient. This change benefits thousands of citizens who previously faced challenges due to unavailable or outdated documentation.
