OpenAI has pulled the plug on its AI video-generation app Sora less than two years after its headline-grabbing debut, which showcased the ability to create highly realistic clips from simple text prompts.
At the same time, OpenAI is winding down its $1 billion content partnership with Disney. The company told the BBC on Wednesday that it has discontinued Sora to redirect resources toward other priorities, including robotics aimed at helping people tackle real-world, physical tasks.
OpenAI has declared the termination of its Sora consumer app along with the online platform utilized by professionals for creating videos. This decision suggests that OpenAI will halt its initiatives in advancing video-generation technologies.
A spokesperson for The Walt Disney Company said "we respect OpenAI's decision to exit the video generation business and to shift its priorities elsewhere". Disney plans to collaborate with other AI platforms to explore responsible uses of the technology while ensuring intellectual property rights are not violated.
OpenAI announced its intention to develop various types of advanced AI, such as 'agentic' technology that can perform tasks independently with minimal human supervision.
