The Indian government has unveiled a transformative plan to install rooftop solar panels on 1 crore (10 million) homes nationwide by 2026-27 as part of the ambitious PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. This flagship initiative, launched in February 2024, aims to empower families with clean, affordable solar electricity and accelerate India's transition to sustainable energy sources.

The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is the world’s largest domestic solar scheme, targeting the installation of rooftop solar systems in one crore households across all states and union territories by March 2027.

To drive rapid adoption, the government has provisioned over ₹75,000 crore in funding and set clear annual milestones; installations are expected to double to 20 lakh by October 2025, reach 40 lakh by March 2026, and culminate in 1 crore homes by the program’s end date.

As of July 2025, the scheme has made impressive progress, with over 10 lakh homes already equipped with solar panels and more than ₹4,700 crore in subsidies disbursed to beneficiaries. States like Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu are among the frontrunners in rolling out installations.

Subsidies are deposited directly into beneficiaries' bank accounts, and easy financing including collateral-free loans up to ₹2 lakh at reduced interest rates makes participation affordable for all families. For many, the potential savings on electricity bills can reach ₹15,000–18,000 per year.

Applying for the scheme is straightforward via the official government portal. After registration, homeowners receive support at each stage, from vendor selection to installation and commissioning. State power distribution companies oversee local execution, with performance monitored nationally to ensure timely progress.

The program also includes establishing a Model Solar Village in every district, incentivizing community-wide adoption and building local capacity for long-term energy self-reliance.
