Sony announced a global price increase for its PlayStation 5 lineup, including the PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal, pointing to ongoing pressures in the global economic landscape. The company said the move follows careful evaluation to ensure it can continue providing premium gaming experiences, while noting the hike will impact its user base.
By the end of next week, the cost of a Sony PlayStation will be about 30% more than it was at this time last year. Citing “continued pressures in the global economic landscape,” the Japanese company said that as of next Thursday, the PS5 will cost $649.99 in the U.S. The price for its digital edition was also raised by $100, to $599.99. The PS5 Pro will cost $899.99, a $150 increase, AP reported.
Why PS5 Prices Are Rising:
Sony’s price hike comes amid global market turbulence, rising component costs, and supply disruptions. Last week, Iran’s attack on Qatar’s natural gas facility threatened helium supplies, used in computer chips, while RAM prices are surging due to AI demand. Other gaming companies, including Nintendo and Microsoft, have also raised console and accessory prices recently.
Sony will raise PS5 prices globally starting April 2, 2026, with the standard PS5 now priced at $649.99 in the U.S., the PS5 Digital Edition at $599.99, and the PS5 Pro at $899.99. The PlayStation Portal remote player will also see a price increase to $249.99. For other regions, Sony has advised customers to check pricing with local retailers or through its official sales platform where available.
This is Sony’s latest PS5 price hike, following a $50 increase in the U.S. last August. The standard PS5 and Digital Edition are now $100 higher, the PS5 Pro is up $150 to $900, and the PlayStation Portal has risen $50. New PS5s now start at $600, up from $500 at launch, ahead of the anticipated GTA 6 release.
