Samsung Electronics has introduced a new category of digital display designed to rethink business signage. The company has announced the global launch of its 13-inch Samsung Colour E-Paper, a paper-thin screen that pairs ultra-low-power technology with a casing partially made from bio-resin sourced from phytoplankton. Samsung says it is the world’s first commercial display to incorporate this material.
The new model, EM13DX, expands Samsung’s Colour E-Paper lineup and is designed as a practical alternative to printed posters and paper signs. Built using digital ink technology, the display consumes almost no power when showing static content, making it well-suited for places where information rarely changes but visibility still matters. Retail stores, cafes, offices and hotels are among the environments Samsung is targeting with this launch.
Hyoung Jae Kim, Executive Vice-President of Samsung Electronics’ Visual Display Business, said the display reflects a shift in how digital signage is being used. He explained that companies are increasingly looking for flexible and efficient ways to communicate, and Colour E-Paper is meant to replace traditional paper signage with a lightweight, low-energy digital option.
Samsung's 13-inch Color E-Paper, the smallest in their lineup, is roughly the size of an A4 sheet. It features a resolution of 1,600 x 1,200 with a 4:3 aspect ratio, ideal for applications like menus, price tags, notices, and promotional displays. Samsung claims that its color imaging algorithm improves clarity and smoothness, delivering visuals that resemble printed posters.
The display comes with a rechargeable battery and USB Type-C connectivity, making it possible to install the display without having to rely on a power source at all times. The display measures only 17.9 mm in thickness and weighs approximately 0.9 kg with the battery installed, making it very portable and easy to reposition depending on the needs of the display.
