Instagram has introduced a new creator recognition initiative called the Rings award, shifting away from traditional, celebrity-hosted events in favor of a more intimate and design-focused approach. This program will honor 25 standout creators with a custom-designed, physical ring crafted by renowned fashion designer Grace Wales Bonner.

While there is no monetary prize, each winner will also receive a digital version of the ring to display proudly on their Instagram profile and Stories, offering both tangible and virtual symbols of achievement within the platform's ecosystem.

Besides the ring, creators will gain an exclusive perk: the option to personalize their profile background with a distinctive gradient. This feature is unprecedented on the platform, as Instagram has never permitted such a degree of profile customization previously. Over two decades ago, platforms like Myspace and Friendster provided similar customization options.

Selection process

Unlike other ceremonies that depend on official categories, these awards will select 25 winners from a diverse array of topics and interest groups.

“The criteria was really tough,” said Chen. “But really, we were looking for people who take creative chances and who are always pushing the envelope and thinking about new ways to talk to their audience”.

Jury & Result

Instagram aspires for this to turn into a recurring occasion. "We’re eager to observe the reception and how the winners relish the actual Instagram spotlight," Chen commented. The announcement of the winners is set for October 16.

The selection panel features ring designer Grace Wales Bonner, Instagram's head Adam Mosseri, YouTube star MKBHD, actress Yara Shahidi, along with Spike Lee, Marc Jacobs, Kaws, Pat McGrath, Cedric Grolet, Ilona Maher, Tainy, Murad Osmann, and Eva Chen. They will reduce the number of candidates from thousands to hundreds before deciding on the ultimate winners.
