Truecaller Introduces AI-Powered Message IDs for Filtering Messages from Verified Businesses

Truecaller, the leading global caller ID and communication platform, has launched a groundbreaking feature: AI-powered Message IDs

Pragati Chougule

AI-powered Message IDs are a new tool within the Truecaller app that leverages advanced artificial intelligence and large language models (LLMs) to scan and categorize SMS messages directly on the user’s device. The feature identifies important messages such as bank alerts, OTPs, delivery updates, payment reminders, and flight itineraries, ensuring users never miss a critical update-even when their inbox is flooded with spam or promotional texts.

All message analysis happens locally, preserving user privacy and ensuring that sensitive data never leaves the device. The feature is available to both premium and non-premium users, supporting multiple languages including Hindi, English, Swahili, and Spanish, and is live in India and over 30 other countries.

To activate AI-powered Message IDs, users simply grant Truecaller permission to read SMS messages and display notifications over other apps. Once enabled, the system:

  • Scans incoming SMS in real time using AI and LLMs.

  • Summarizes and highlights key information for quick action.

  • Delivers instant pop-up alerts for important messages, allowing users to bypass irrelevant content and focus on what matters most.

A standout aspect of this update is the introduction of Green Message IDs. These messages come with a green tick mark, indicating that the sender is a verified business authenticated by Truecaller. This added layer of verification helps users distinguish genuine business communications from potential scams or spoofed messages, significantly reducing the risk of fraud.

Only businesses that have been vetted and authenticated by Truecaller can send messages with a Green Message ID, boosting user confidence and trust. The green tick system is a direct response to the growing threat of SMS-based phishing and fraud, offering users a reliable way to filter out suspicious or fake messages.

Truecaller’s move comes as SMS spam and phishing attacks continue to rise globally. By integrating AI-driven filtering and business verification, the company is setting a new standard for secure, user-friendly mobile communication. The feature is expected to benefit millions of users and thousands of businesses, making SMS a safer and more reliable channel for essential updates.

John Joseph, Product Director at Truecaller, summed up the launch:

“With the integration of AI in Message IDs for both premium and non-premium users, we’re providing people with a smarter, more secure way to manage their important SMS messages. Our mission is to make communication safer and more efficient, and this innovation represents the next step in our journey."

Truecaller’s AI-powered Message IDs and Green Message verification mark a significant leap forward in SMS management. By combining advanced AI with robust business authentication, Truecaller is empowering users to take control of their inboxes, confidently engage with verified businesses, and stay protected from SMS scams-ushering in a new era of secure and efficient mobile communication.
