How does the feature work on WhatsApp?

WhatsApp has introduced a seamless way to translate messages within chats, no copy-pasting, no third-party apps. Here's how to use it:

  1. Long-press on the message you want to translate (in a different language).

  2. Tap the ‘Translate’ option that appears.

  3. Select your preferred language from the list.

  4. WhatsApp will instantly translate the text right within the chat window.

Privacy-Focused Translation

WhatsApp has emphasised that "message translations were designed to protect the privacy of your chats. That’s why translations occur on your device where WhatsApp cannot see them." This means that the feature maintains the platform's strong commitment to end-to-end encryption and user privacy.

Languages offered

WhatsApp has confirmed that its new message translation feature is being rolled out gradually, starting with a limited number of languages. On Android devices, users will initially be able to translate messages in English, Hindi, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, and Arabic. For iPhone users, the feature will support over 19 languages at launch, although the complete list is yet to be officially announced. This phased rollout is part of WhatsApp’s broader effort to enhance cross-language communication within its global user base.
