
Pune: Tensions escalated on the Pune-Nagar Highway as relatives of the deceased and injured, joined by laborers, staged a roadblock on Saturday (December 23) evening. The protestors demanded Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis's visit and financial assistance of ₹25 lakh for the families of the deceased.
The protest began at approximately 5:30 PM, disrupting traffic flow on the busy highway. Police personnel, led by Deputy Commissioner of Zone IV Himmat Jadhav and Senior Inspector Pandit Rejitwad, intervened to pacify the demonstrators. After prolonged discussions, the protestors agreed to disperse when assured of a meeting with Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar.
Six individuals injured in the Wagholi accident are receiving treatment at Sassoon General Hospital. Among them, 19-year-old Janaki Pawar remains in critical condition after a dumper ran over her abdomen, causing severe internal injuries. She underwent emergency surgery and is on ventilator support.
Another victim, 18-year-old Nisha Pawar, sustained spinal injuries, while 20-year-old Nagesh Pawar suffered fractures in his chest and left arm. The remaining victims—Roshan Bhosale (7), Sudarshan Vairat (18), and Alisha Pawar (50)—sustained fractures in their legs and are reported to be stable.
The accident claimed the lives of two-year-old Vaibhav Pawar, one-year-old Vaibhavi Pawar, and 22-year-old Vishal Pawar. All three belonged to the same family. Post-mortem examinations were completed early in the morning, and their bodies were handed over to their relatives by the afternoon.
The demonstrators expressed dissatisfaction with the government's inaction, stating that the affected families have been neglected. They demanded proper rehabilitation and compensation for the laborers affected by the accident.
