Pune, 23rd July 2026: After five consecutive days of persistent rainfall, city once again witnesses intense showers on Wednesday, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert for the district, including the ghat regions for Thursday.
A red alert is the highest level of weather warning issued by the IMD and indicates the possibility of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, urging people to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel in vulnerable areas.
According to the IMD, heavy rainfall is expected to continue across Pune district over the next two days, particularly in the ghat areas, where isolated places may receive extremely heavy rain on Thursday. The weather department has advised residents in these regions to remain alert due to the possibility of waterlogging, reduced visibility, and disruptions.
While rain is expected to continue for the next four days, its intensity is likely to decrease from Thursday onward. Over the next two days, the sky is expected to remain mostly cloudy during the afternoon, with light to moderate rainfall likely in the city. Light showers are expected to continue until the end of the week.
Meteorologists attributed the current spell to an active monsoon system over Maharashtra. A cyclonic circulation has developed over parts of Andhra Pradesh and adjoining areas near the Bay of Bengal, while a trough extends from the Bay of Bengal to the Arabian Sea.
This weather pattern has strengthened monsoon activity, resulting in widespread rainfall across Konkan and Madhya Maharashtra.
Rain returned to Pune city and district on Sunday after a brief lull and intensified on Tuesday evening. On Wednesday, the city remained under cloudy skies from the morning, with a heavy spells around noon followed by intermittent light showers across several parts of Pune and its suburbs.
The IMD said favourable weather conditions will keep rainfall activity over Pune active for the next four days, although the intensity is expected to gradually reduce after Thursday.
