Chakan, Alandi, and Khed-Rajgurunagar to Form New Municipal Corporation

This new entity will include the municipal councils of Chakan, Alandi, and Khed-Rajgurunagar, along with around 50 nearby villages

Pune: The Pune district is on the verge of having a third municipal corporation as plans for the formation of a new Chakan Municipal Corporation gain momentum.

This new entity will include the municipal councils of Chakan, Alandi, and Khed-Rajgurunagar, along with around 50 nearby villages. Key departments, including the district administration, Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporations, and PMRDA, have expressed their approval for this proposal.

The Urban Development Department had earlier asked the Divisional Commissioner to gather details about the feasibility of creating a new municipal corporation in this area.

Reports have been submitted, which recommend the inclusion of 50 villages:

  • Chakan Municipal Council and 24 villages

  • Alandi Municipal Council and 13 villages

  • Khed-Rajgurunagar Municipal Council and 13 villages

The proposed municipal corporation will cover an area of 300 to 350 square kilometers and house an estimated population of 4.5 lakh.

Background and Current Developments

With Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporations having already expanded significantly, adding more villages to their boundaries is deemed impractical.

The concept of a new municipal corporation was first suggested during the tenure of the Maha Vikas Aghadi government. Ajit Pawar, the then Deputy Chief Minister, had hinted at establishing a new corporation on the other side of the river during a public event in Pimpri-Chinchwad.

Reports from the Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporations, the district administration, and PMRDA have now been consolidated, recommending the formation of a new municipal corporation. The proposal is currently under review by the Divisional Commissioner, who will soon forward it to the state government for final approval.

Key Features of the Proposed Municipal Corporation

  • Area Coverage: 300-350 square kilometers

  • Population: Approximately 4.5 lakh

Constituent Areas:

  • Chakan Municipal Council with 24 surrounding villages

  • Alandi Municipal Council with 13 surrounding villages

  • Khed-Rajgurunagar Municipal Council with 13 surrounding villages

The Divisional Commissioner is expected to submit the finalized proposal to the state government in the coming weeks. Once approved, the new municipal corporation will officially become the third municipal body in Pune district, following Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad.
