COVID vaccination drive: Preps at full throttle for vaccine roll-out in these states

India is about to begin its nationwide inoculation campaign against the COVID-19 outbreak on January 16th. On Tuesday, four airlines will deliver more than 54 lakh doses of Covishield to eleven states.

DCGI approved two vaccines for emergency use in the first week on January, Covishield and Covaxin.

Covaxin is developed by Hyderabad based company Bharat Biotech and is completely a make in India vaccine. On the other hand, Covishield is a joint effort of AstraZeneca-Oxford, but will be manufactured in India by the Serum Institute.

First consignment carrying nearly 2,64,000 doses of vaccine has already reached the national capital.

Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Punjab, West Bengal, Karnataka, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh are among the eleven states where the vaccine will reach today.

In addition to Delhi, Chennai and Ahemadabad have also received 7,08,000 and 2,76,000 doses respectively.

Kolkata will get the highest number of vaccine doses followed by Chennai. Whereas, will received the least number of shots.

The much awaited vaccination will commence on January 16. Healthcare and front line workers which are estimated to be approximately three crores will be given the vaccine on priority.

In a high-level meeting on Saturday last week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reviewed the status and readiness of COVID-19 vaccines across states and the Union territories.
