Pune: Ongoing construction activities, road development projects, and metro work in Pune have significantly increased dust pollution in various parts of the city, causing discomfort to both motorists and residents.

Despite the growing issue, builders and contractors have been lax in implementing dust control measures, prompting Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to intervene.

The PMC plans to issue notices to contractors and builders, instructing them to take immediate measures to curb dust pollution. Municipal Commissioner is set to hold a meeting with officials to discuss actionable steps and enforce accountability.

Construction activities are at their peak in Kothrud, Baner, Balewadi, Warje Malwadi, Karvenagar, Dhayari, Narhe, Katraj, Ambegaon, Hadapsar, Kondhwa, Mundhwa, Kharadi, Dhanori, Yerawada, Vishrantwadi, and Bopodi.

Central areas of Pune, along with major routes like Sinhagad Road, Vishrantwadi, and Ganeshkhind Road, are also witnessing large-scale metro, road, and flyover development projects.

The movement of dump trucks carrying gravel, soil, and crushed stones, as well as cement spillages from mixers, has further aggravated the dust problem.

Construction sites are required to adopt preventive measures like erecting barriers, covering materials with green nets, and using water sprays to suppress dust.

However, the lack of adherence to these practices has worsened air quality, especially during winter, leading to respiratory issues among the public.

PMC's Recommended Measures

  • Installing protective sheets and green nets around construction sites.

  • Spraying water regularly to control airborne dust.

  • Ensuring proper handling and transportation of construction materials.
