Pune, 8th August 2025: Pune, a city known for its rich history, vibrant culture, and growing technological importance, has become the centre of Maharashtra’s latest push for urban safety and smart policing. Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated the next phase of the city’s CCTV surveillance system, calling it the most advanced in the country.
Fadnavis recalled that Pune was among the first to implement CCTV surveillance in August 2015, and the city is now seeing a major upgrade with cutting-edge cameras, including night vision technology. These cameras will assist in crime prevention, help monitor traffic flow, and improve law enforcement response.
The newly launched command and control centre will enable immediate tracking of offenders. Fadnavis mentioned that even if someone tries to flee after committing a crime, they can be caught quickly through this system. Commenting on the system’s reach, he humorously said it reminded him of the song “Bach ke rehna re, tujh pe nazar hai.”
Addressing concerns raised by Deputy CM Ajit Pawar about technical failures, Fadnavis assured that if any camera stops working, an alert will be triggered instantly and it must be fixed within 24 hours. To ensure daily monitoring, the Commissioner has been instructed to play a Shivaji Maharaj-themed powada song on the system daily, which will act as a health check of the system.
The CCTV network is being extended to blackspots like hills and isolated zones, work on Bopdev Ghat has been completed, and other areas will be covered in the next two months.
