Pune: The Pune branch of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) conducted a raid at "Shri Mahalaxmi Pedhi" Jewelers on Central Street, Camp, and seized 300 grams of gold jewelry that did not carry the mandatory Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID).
According to S.D. Rane, BIS Pune Branch Head, the raid was carried out after officials discovered that the jeweler was selling gold ornaments without HUID, in violation of BIS regulations. The action was taken under Sections 14 and 15 of the BIS Act, 2016, and further legal proceedings will be initiated under Section 29 of the BIS Act.
BIS Regulations and Compliance
Under the BIS Hallmarking Rules, all gold jewelry sold in India must have a unique HUID to ensure quality, authenticity, and consumer protection. Selling non-hallmarked jewelry is illegal, and offenders can face strict penalties under BIS laws.
The 300 grams of non-compliant gold jewelry seized during the raid will be subjected to further inspection, and the jeweler may face penalties or legal consequences as per BIS guidelines.
Consumer Advisory: Verify Gold Hallmarking Before Purchase
Following the raid, BIS officials urged customers to check the authenticity of gold jewelry before purchasing. S.D. Rane advised buyers to verify HUID markings and suggested using the BIS Care app for authentication.
"Before purchasing gold jewelry, ensure that it carries an HUID and verify it through the BIS Care app. Consumers can also report complaints through the app, and their personal details will remain confidential."
