Pune: In a remarkable feat of medical coordination, the organ donation of 25-year-old Deepak Darade from Parbhani has saved the lives of five patients across Maharashtra. His heart, liver, kidneys, and lungs were successfully transplanted into recipients in Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.
One of the most significant efforts in this life-saving mission was the 450 km-long Green Corridor from Parbhani to Nagpur, which enabled doctors to transport his liver within five hours, facilitating a successful transplant for a 63-year-old patient at New Era Hospital, Nagpur.
Tragic Accident and the Family’s Brave Decision
Deepak, a resident of Jintur in Parbhani district, met with a severe road accident on Saturday while crossing a farm near a petrol pump on the Jintur-Onda road. A speeding two-wheeler struck him, resulting in critical head injuries and internal brain hemorrhage, leaving him in a coma.
Doctors at a hospital in Parbhani did their best, but by Saturday morning, Deepak was declared brain-dead. Amid their unimaginable grief, his family took the courageous decision to donate his organs, giving new hope to five critically ill patients.
Longest Green Corridor for Liver Transport in Maharashtra
Due to the urgency of the transplants, a special Green Corridor was set up between Parbhani and Nagpur to transport Deepak’s liver across 450 km. The critical organ reached Nagpur in just five hours, marking the second time Nagpur has received a liver from another city. The first such case was recorded in 2023, when a liver was transported from AIIMS Raipur.
Additionally, a separate Green Corridor was created between Parbhani and Nanded to transport his heart. From there, a charter flight carried it to Mumbai, where it was transplanted into a 53-year-old woman. Similarly, his lungs were flown to Pune via another charter flight for transplantation into a 50-year-old female patient.
