According to Pune Traffic Police data, over 6,500 drivers were penalized for drunk driving between May 2024 and May 2025. This figure represents a significant increase compared to previous years, reflecting a zero-tolerance approach by law enforcement.

Police have deployed additional teams at major junctions, especially during weekends and festival seasons. Surprise checks at hotspots, pubs, and highways have become routine, deterring potential offenders. Offenders face heavy fines, license suspension, and, in severe cases, arrest and vehicle impoundment. The police have launched public awareness drives, collaborating with NGOs and local organizations to educate citizens about the risks and consequences of drunk driving.

Preliminary data suggests a decline in the number of road accidents caused by alcohol-impaired driving. More citizens are now aware of the legal and moral consequences of drunk driving. The fear of penalties and social stigma has led to more responsible behavior among drivers, with many opting for cabs or designated drivers after social gatherings.

Some drivers continue to flout the law, risking their lives and those of others. Cases of minors and unlicensed individuals driving under the influence have also been reported. The police face limitations in manpower and equipment, making it difficult to monitor every part of the city round the clock.
