Maharashtra is bracing for a spell of severe weather, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a high alert for storms, thunder, and heavy rains across the state over the next five days. The warning covers major cities including Mumbai, Pune, Nashik, Nagpur, and several rural districts, urging residents and authorities to take precautionary measures to ensure safety and minimize disruption.
According to the latest IMD bulletin, a strong weather system is developing over the Arabian Sea and central India, bringing with it:
Intense thunderstorms
Gusty winds (up to 60 km/h)
Heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated areas
Lightning strikes and local flooding
The alert is in effect from May 19 through May 23, 2025, with the most severe impact expected in coastal and central Maharashtra, including the Konkan region and parts of Marathwada and Vidarbha.
While the entire state is under watch, the following regions are expected to be most affected:
Mumbai Metropolitan Region: Risk of waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and flight delays.
Pune and Surrounding Districts: Heavy rain may lead to local flooding and power outages.
Nashik, Nagpur, and Vidarbha: Thunderstorms could damage crops and disrupt rural life.
Konkan Coast: High winds and rough seas, posing dangers to fishermen and coastal communities.
Avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rains and storms.
Stay indoors when thunder and lightning are present.
Keep emergency kits (flashlights, batteries, first-aid supplies) ready.
Secure loose objects on rooftops and balconies to prevent wind damage.
Monitor official weather updates via IMD, local news, and government channels.
Farmers are advised to take precautions to protect crops and livestock.
The Maharashtra State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) has activated emergency protocols across all districts. Local administrations have been instructed to:
Set up temporary shelters in flood-prone areas.
Deploy rescue teams and medical units.
Ensure proper drainage and clear blocked water channels.
Coordinate with power companies to address outages swiftly.
Schools in vulnerable districts may be closed temporarily if conditions worsen. Fishermen have been warned against venturing into the sea until the all-clear is given.
Meteorologists predict that the weather system will gradually weaken after May 23, with rainfall intensity reducing and skies clearing by the weekend. However, isolated showers and thunderstorms may persist in some areas as the monsoon approaches.
