Pune: In response to the mysterious deaths of pigs in Kothrud, a three-member team from the State Animal Husbandry Department conducted an on-site inspection. The investigation confirmed that a jaundice-like illness was responsible for the fatalities, raising concerns about the health and sanitation conditions in the area.

During the visit, a dead pig was discovered at the Kothrud garbage depot, leading to an immediate post-mortem examination. Findings revealed that the animal succumbed to a jaundice-like disease, prompting further investigations. Samples from the pig’s organs have been sent to a laboratory in Bhopal for detailed analysis, said Assistant Commissioner Balasaheb Gaikwad.

The repeated discovery of dead pigs in Kothrud over the past week had alarmed residents, but PMC officials were initially unable to determine the cause. Moreover, the absence of coordination between PMC’s health department and the Kothrud-Bavdhan ward office resulted in delays in receiving information and taking action.

Expressing dissatisfaction, local activist Dushyant Mohol said he had been following up on the issue for the past 10–12 days, yet officials failed to provide an exact death toll. Additionally, no significant preventive measures were taken to reassure residents.

In response, PMC Health Chief Dr. Neena Borade clarified that 41 dead pigs had been officially recorded and removed by the civic body. In an effort to control the situation, PMC has started fumigation in the affected areas and deployed a special task force to prevent further incidents.

Additionally, 76 pigs were captured today and placed under observation. These pigs will be sent to a slaughterhouse within two days, officials confirmed.
