Mumbai and the entire Konkan region are likely to witness improved rainfall activity from June 23 as weather conditions become favourable for the advancement of the southwest monsoon.
While several coastal locations such as Vengurla, Devgad and Harnai have already experienced monsoon showers, rainfall activity is expected to intensify in the coming days.
The monsoon, which normally reaches Mumbai around June 11, has been delayed this year. Similar delays were recorded during the El Niño years of 2019 and 2023, when the monsoon arrived in Mumbai on June 25. Weather experts now expect a similar pattern in 2026, with the monsoon likely to make its onset over the city around June 25.
Following its arrival, Mumbai and the Konkan region are expected to receive widespread and heavy rainfall between June 25 and July 1. The rainfall is expected to bring significant relief from the humid daytime conditions and warm nights that residents have been experiencing over the past few weeks.
The advancing monsoon is also expected to spread into other parts of Maharashtra during the final week of June. Districts including Nashik, Ahilyanagar, Pune, Satara, Kolhapur and parts of western Marathwada may begin receiving monsoon showers.
However, eastern Marathwada and Vidarbha are likely to see more substantial rainfall only during the first or second week of July, although isolated pre-monsoon showers may occur earlier.
Despite a large rainfall deficit in Konkan so far this season and concerns related to El Niño, experts remain optimistic about Mumbai’s water supply. With nearly four months of the monsoon season still remaining, rainfall during the coming weeks is expected to replenish lakes and reservoirs supplying water to the city, helping meet Mumbai’s drinking water needs for the year.
