Pune: In an effort to foster a secure and industry-friendly environment in Pimpri-Chinchwad and surrounding MIDC areas, the Industrial Complaint Redressal Cell of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Police has taken action in 11 extortion cases, resulting in the arrest of 31 accused. Established to address issues faced by industrial representatives, the cell has been pivotal in tackling extortion-related incidents.
The Pimpri-Chinchwad region, an industrial hub with a population of over 40 lakh, encompasses key areas such as Alandi-Markal, Chakan, Bhosari, Hinjawadi, and Talegaon Dabhade. These areas house approximately 2,000 small and 400 large enterprises, alongside the Hinjawadi IT hub.
Incidents of local groups pressurizing company officials under the pretense of labor disputes (Mathadi) have become common. Police note that companies often hesitate to report these cases due to fear of retaliation. To counter this, the Industrial Complaint Redressal Cell was formed in March 2023, offering a platform for industrial representatives to file grievances and ensure swift redressal.
Since its formation, the cell has processed 11 complaints and arrested 31 of the 37 accused individuals linked to extortion cases. The cell also maintains regular communication with industry officials through WhatsApp groups and direct contact to gather confidential information and provide support.

Industry Concerns and Police Assurances
Despite these initiatives, industrialists remain hesitant to come forward. “Many entrepreneurs are unaware of the Industrial Complaint Redressal Cell, which is why complaint numbers are low,” said Dilip Batwal, Secretary of the Chakan Industries Federation. Sandeep Belsare, President of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Small Industries Association, suggested that police build confidence among industrialists by ensuring anonymity and conducting awareness meetings with business groups.
Police Deputy Commissioner Sandeep Doiphode has urged businesses to file complaints without fear. “We maintain complete confidentiality of the complainant's identity. Regular meetings are held to encourage entrepreneurs to come forward and report incidents,” he said.
