Pune: The Pimpri-Chinchwad Traffic Police have intensified their crackdown on drunk driving, registering 4153 cases between January and December last year. Drunk driving is a major contributor to road accidents, often endangering not only the driver but also innocent pedestrians and other motorists.

To prevent accidents caused by drunk driving, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Commissionerate’s traffic divisions, including those in Bhosari, Dighi-Alandi, Chakan, Dehuroad, Talawade, Wakad, Sangvi, Bavdhan, Nigdi, Pimpri, Chinchwad, Hinjewadi, Talegaon, and Mahalunge, regularly conducted roadblock inspections. Breath analyzers were used to test suspected drivers, and those found intoxicated faced legal action.

The strict enforcement measures have been particularly effective during festivals when incidents of drunk driving tend to spike. During the recent Holi celebrations, traffic police caught 276 intoxicated drivers in a single day and took immediate legal action against them.

Drunk driving has caused serious injuries and fatalities on the road. Pedestrians and other drivers remain at risk due to reckless intoxicated motorists.

"To prevent drunk driving, we have set up checkpoints at multiple locations. Drivers are tested using breath analyzers, and those found intoxicated face strict legal action."

– Sunil Pinjan, Police Inspector, Traffic Department
