Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has intensified its efforts to address the growing pigeon nuisance in the city. Over the past 20 days, the PMC has imposed fines totaling ₹28,000 on individuals found feeding pigeons in public spaces, a practice that poses health risks and contributes to unsanitary conditions.

The issue came to light after repeated violations of PMC directives prohibiting the feeding of pigeons. Pigeons’ feathers and droppings are known to carry bacteria that can cause lung-related illnesses. Reports of such diseases have surged recently, prompting the PMC to take stricter measures.

Targeted Action in Key Areas

The PMC’s Solid Waste Management Department conducted operations in areas like Kothrud, Warje Malwadi, Sarasbaug, Swargate, and near the riverbanks. Violators were penalized under the public cleanliness regulation, which allows fines ranging from ₹500 to ₹5,000.

PMC Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhosale had earlier directed the department to not only enforce penalties but also run awareness campaigns. Dedicated teams were deployed to educate citizens in affected areas, warning them about the risks and fines. Additionally, the PMC installed awareness boards in hotspots frequented by pigeons.

Despite the awareness efforts, violations continued, leading to penalties against 38 individuals since December 1. Deputy Commissioner Sandeep Kadam stated that the PMC is planning to escalate fines for repeat offenders. The civic body is also conducting cleanup drives in areas heavily occupied by pigeons to ensure public hygiene and safety.
