Pune: As summer temperatures rise, water demand in Pune’s housing societies has surged, leading to increased spending on water tankers. However, several societies have initiated water conservation efforts to reduce their reliance on tankers and optimize existing water resources.
In various areas, including Pashan, Sus Road, Warje, Vadgaon, Dhayari, Karvenagar, and Bopodi, societies have adopted different techniques such as rainwater harvesting and controlled water usage. Despite ongoing water leakages in several parts of the city—an issue that the municipal corporation has not yet addressed—residents have taken proactive steps to conserve water.
Challenges and Conservation Initiatives
Pune’s water supply situation remained stable this year due to good rainfall in the Khadakwasla dam chain. However, rising temperatures since January and February have increased water demand. Some city areas face irregular water supply, and falling borewell water levels have led to shortages. To counter this, societies have turned to both municipal and private water tankers.
On the other hand, some housing societies have prioritized efficient water management over additional water procurement. Through coordinated efforts, many societies have successfully reduced wastage and implemented structured water conservation plans.
Case Studies of Water Conservation
Green Hills Society, Sus Road
At Green Hills Society, a recent general body meeting emphasized water conservation, receiving strong support from most members. The society has implemented measures to limit excessive water usage, particularly for terrace cleaning, vehicle washing, and gardening.
A key initiative involves channeling rainwater harvesting into borewells, ensuring an adequate water supply until April. Residents known for excessive water usage are counseled, and strict monitoring has led to a noticeable reduction in water consumption. “Through disciplined efforts, we have managed to save a significant amount of water,” said Harish Patil, a member of the society.
Sai Aashirwad Society, Baner
Sai Aashirwad Society has also made remarkable strides in water conservation. The society maintains and repairs its rainwater harvesting system regularly, ensuring maximum water recharge around borewells during the monsoon season.
Currently, the borewell and municipal water supply are sufficient to meet the society’s needs, and residents are actively limiting their consumption. As a result, the society has not required private water tankers. “Residents are conscious of their water use, and we have collectively ensured sustainable water consumption,” said Anand Bokare, a society member.
