Pune: In response to Pune’s expanding city limits and the establishment of seven new police stations, the Crime Branch of Pune Police is set to undergo major restructuring. The current strength of 364 officers in the Crime Branch will be increased by 200 personnel to strengthen crime control and enhance efficiency.

Strengthening Crime Prevention Efforts

The Crime Branch plays a critical role in crime prevention, monitoring criminal activities, and assisting police stations in investigations.

Pune currently has 39 police stations, while the Crime Branch operates through six major units and six specialized squads, including:

  • Two Anti-Extortion Squads

  • Two Anti-Narcotics Squads

  • Two Anti-Dacoity and Vehicle Theft Squads

With the city’s growing population and increased crime rates, the department’s jurisdiction has expanded, necessitating this restructuring.

To curb the rising incidents of chain snatching, vehicle theft, and house burglaries, the Crime Branch has introduced three dedicated squads. Each squad will consist of one officer and 8-10 personnel who will conduct regular city-wide patrols.

These teams will exclusively focus on crime prevention and will not be assigned to routine law enforcement duties such as crowd control or security arrangements.
