Pune, 11 August 2025: Pune’s railway services are set for a historic change after 166 years, as Hadapsar and Khadki stations are being upgraded into major terminals to share the heavy load of Pune Junction. The Indian Railways plans to complete the development work at both stations within the next two to three months.
Once operational, about 25 trains currently starting from Pune Junction will be shifted to Hadapsar and Khadki. This is expected to ease congestion significantly, with daily passenger numbers at Pune Junction dropping by around 62,000. The move will also allow smoother train operations and reduce delays caused by overcrowding on platforms and tracks.
Pune Junction, established in 1858 and expanded several times since, has long been a central point in the region’s rail network. However, limited space and increasing demand have led to severe congestion. Recognising Pune’s growing importance, the Railway Board allocated about ₹125 crore for the development of satellite stations, ₹98 crore for Hadapsar and ₹35 crore for Khadki.
At Khadki, four platforms are being upgraded, with two converted to high-level platforms to handle express trains. The station will primarily serve routes to Mumbai, Gujarat, and parts of South India.
Hadapsar, which already has three platforms, is getting two new stabling lines, expanded platforms to accommodate 24-coach trains, a new foot overbridge, and an advanced electronic interlocking system for safer and faster train operations.
Railway officials say the upgrades will improve punctuality, reduce waiting times, and make travel more comfortable. Facilities at both stations will include lifts, escalators, waiting rooms, CCTV surveillance, food courts, and parking areas.
The decentralisation is expected to mark a new chapter in Pune’s railway history, offering passengers modern amenities while decongesting one of Maharashtra’s busiest stations.
