Pune: Traffic congestion in Pune, a city undergoing rapid urbanization, has reached alarming levels. According to a global report by Danish organization TomTom, Pune ranks fourth among cities worldwide with the worst traffic conditions. Commuters in Pune take an average of 33 minutes and 22 seconds to travel just 10 kilometers.
Global Rankings for Traffic Congestion:
Barranquilla, Colombia - 36 minutes, 6 seconds
Kolkata, India - 34 minutes, 33 seconds
Bengaluru, India - 34 minutes, 10 seconds
Pune, India - 33 minutes, 22 seconds
London, UK - 33 minutes, 17 seconds
The report highlights the growing pressure on Pune's roads as a result of an increase in private vehicle usage, inadequate public transportation, and ongoing infrastructure development projects.
Experts' Insights and Recommendations
Ranjit Gadgil, Director of Parisar Organization, stressed the importance of better traffic policies. He said, “Enhancing public transportation systems like buses is crucial. Reducing private vehicle usage and strictly implementing traffic policies are the need of the hour.”
Pranjali Deshpande, a traffic expert, echoed similar sentiments, saying, “To combat congestion, city roads should be widened, sidewalks improved, and urban planning prioritized. Expanding metro networks and strengthening public transport will go a long way in easing the burden on Pune’s roads.”
Challenges and Solutions
While projects such as metro extensions and flyover construction are aimed at improving infrastructure, they have also contributed to temporary traffic woes. Experts believe that collaborative efforts between the government and citizens are essential to address this crisis effectively.
If urgent measures are not taken, Pune’s growing population and vehicular density might permanently trap the city in a web of traffic chaos, impacting its livability and reputation.
