Pune: The number of new cases of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) in Pune has shown a significant decline, bringing relief to health authorities. Out of the 211 recorded cases so far, 144 patients (72 per cent) have successfully recovered, while 56 patients (28 per cent) remain under treatment. However, 11 patients (5 per cent) have succumbed to the illness. On Wednesday (February 19), no new cases were reported.
The decreasing rate of new cases and the increasing number of recovered patients indicate significant progress in handling the outbreak. As per available data, three to five patients recover daily, while only one or two new cases emerge. This suggests that the recovery rate is outpacing new diagnoses.
Dr. Shripad Pujari, a neurologist from Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital, credited effective medical interventions for the steady recovery of GBS patients. Recovered patients regain mobility in their hands and legs, but they require physiotherapy for two to six weeks, depending on the severity of their symptoms.
Most patients can walk again within two to three months and become fully independent in their daily activities.
Many patients are able to return to work within two to four months.
Around 2 per cent of patients continue to face severe mobility issues, while the majority show significant improvement.
