Pune: A retired police officer was allegedly attacked by a group of seven to eight people over a dispute related to a broken drainage cover. The incident occurred at Forest Park in the Viman Nagar area on Sunday (March 9) afternoon. The attackers reportedly used kicks, punches, and an iron weapon to assault the officer.
The victim, Gorakhnath Eknath Shirke (65), a retired sub-inspector of Pune Police, filed a complaint at the Airport Police Station. Based on his statement, a case has been registered against Govind Hanumant Kanal, Mayur Sakat (resident of Yerawada), Raju Devkar, and five other unidentified individuals from Yerawada.
Dispute Over a Broken Drainage Cover Turned Violent
According to police sources, Shirke had previously served at Bund Garden and Chatuhshrungi police stations and retired as a sub-inspector in 2018. He had recently started construction work on the upper floor of his house at Forest Park. Meanwhile, a drainage cover on the public road in the area was found broken.
One of the accused, Govind Kanal, allegedly confronted Shirke and blamed the damage on the movement of vehicles delivering construction materials to his house. Kanal demanded that Shirke repair the drainage cover immediately. Shirke assured him that the issue would be resolved. However, the minor argument escalated, leading to a physical assault.
Attack and Property Damage
Shirke was allegedly attacked with kicks, punches, and an iron weapon. Additionally, the accused reportedly threatened to kill him and vandalized chairs and flower pots in his parking area.
Upon learning about the incident, Police Inspector (Crime) Ashalata Khapare visited the scene. The investigation is currently underway, led by Police Sub-Inspector Chetan Bhosale.
