Pune, 14 August 2025: Maharashtra has emerged as the top-performing state in the country under the Pradhan Mantri Suryaghar Muft Bijli Yojana, with rooftop solar power generation capacity crossing the 1,000 MW (1 GW) mark. The scheme, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in February 2024, aims to provide free electricity to domestic consumers and enable them to earn by selling surplus power.

Mahavitaran Chairman and Managing Director Lokesh Chandra credited the achievement to consumers, staff, and project suppliers, urging more households and housing societies to adopt rooftop solar systems. He emphasised that registering on pmsuryaghar.gov.in is the first step to avail benefits.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Minister of State for Energy Meghna Sakore Bordikar have played a key role in driving the scheme’s success. Over the past 18 months, more than 2.5 lakh consumers in Maharashtra have installed rooftop solar systems, supported by ₹1,870 crore in central subsidies.

In district rankings, Nagpur leads with 157 MW from over 40,000 consumers, followed by Pune with 89 MW from 19,195 consumers, and Jalgaon with 70 MW. Other top districts include Amravati, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, and Nashik.

Under the scheme, households receive a ₹30,000 subsidy for 1 kW, ₹60,000 for 2 kW, and ₹78,000 for 3 kW systems. Housing societies can avail ₹18,000 per kW for projects up to 500 kW. The rooftop systems have a lifespan of around 25 years, meeting household needs and enabling sale of excess power to Mahavitaran.

On Independence Day, awareness drives will be held across the country to promote solar energy, celebrating Maharashtra’s achievement ahead of the occasion.
