Ruby Hall Clinic Performs Landmark Robotic-Assisted Surgery to Treat Complex Hernia

Pune: Doctors at Ruby Hall Clinic, Pune, successfully treated a 65-year-old woman with a large and complicated midline hernia through a robotic-assisted surgical procedure.

This groundbreaking operation, one of the most complex hernia surgeries of its kind in Pune, was performed using the advanced da Vinci robotic system, showcasing the precision and efficacy of minimally invasive surgery.

The patient, who was battling severe discomfort from her hernia, also had significant risk factors, including asthma, hypertension, diabetes, and a high BMI, coupled with a history of three vertical C-sections.

Given the complexity, the surgery required meticulous planning and a multidisciplinary approach to ensure a successful outcome.

Comprehensive Pre-Surgical Preparation Dr. Suprashant Kulkarni, Senior Consultant General and Robotic Surgeon at Ruby Hall Clinic, emphasized the importance of pre-operative optimization.

“We worked with a team of specialists to address the patient’s respiratory issues, control her blood sugar levels, and improve her overall health before surgery. This approach minimized risks and ensured she was in the best condition for the procedure.”

The patient was prescribed a high-protein, fiber-rich diet, daily walking exercises, and lung-strengthening activities like inspiratory spirometry to prepare her body for the surgery. This holistic preparation improved her respiratory and metabolic health, reducing potential complications during the operation.

Revolutionary Use of Robotic Technology

The surgery utilized the da Vinci robotic platform, known for its precision, three-dimensional vision, and minimal trauma to the patient’s body.

Dr. Kulkarni explained, “Robotic technology allows us to correct large hernias through small incisions, reducing infection risks, minimizing recurrence chances, and ensuring faster recovery.”

Despite the complexity and duration of the surgery, she was able to walk within 5.5 hours post-operation and was discharged within 48 hours, tolerating a full oral diet and experiencing minimal pain.

Dr. Kulkarni highlighted the importance of preventive measures, especially for women. “Strengthening abdominal and core muscles during antenatal and postnatal periods can significantly reduce the risk of hernias. Regular fitness routines, guided by medical professionals, are crucial for long-term health.”
