Pune: A police officer was attacked and assaulted by a group of intoxicated men on Senapati Bapat Road after he questioned their disruptive behavior. The officer, who later went to file a complaint, initially faced resistance from the police station, with his case being delayed.
The complaint was eventually registered after Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar intervened and ordered immediate action. Following this, three suspects were arrested, while a case was registered against one more accomplice.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Rupesh Manjrekar, Aniket Ghodke, and Abhijit Dongre, while the search continues for another suspect. The incident took place on Thursday (February 13) night, when Police Naik Chandrakant Jadhav (42), posted at Sahakarnagar Police Station, was on his way home.
Jadhav noticed four individuals drinking inside an auto-rickshaw near Ratna Hospital and causing a commotion on the road. When he intervened and asked them to stop, they abused him and issued threats, saying, "We know you are a police officer. Don’t act too smart." The situation escalated further when the group pushed him, picked up a stone from the road, and assaulted him.
As Jadhav attempted to document the incident by taking photos on his mobile phone, the accused snatched his device. He managed to escape from the attackers and reached Chatuhshrungi Police Station to file a complaint.
However, he was asked to return the next day to lodge the complaint. The following day, police officers again delayed registering the case, citing an ongoing "Tarang" cultural event. Additionally, a politically connected individual pressured Jadhav to drop the complaint.
Frustrated, Jadhav took the matter to senior officials, and once it reached Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar, he ordered the immediate registration of the case and the arrest of the accused. The police subsequently took swift action and arrested three individuals, while the search continues for the fourth accomplice.
