In Fatehpur, Uttar Pradesh, a government clerk named Sudhir Kumar, aged 25, was discovered dead by hanging at his home on Tuesday morning, just one day before his scheduled wedding. Reports suggest he took his own life after allegedly being suspended for failing to attend a meeting concerning the state's ongoing special intensive revision of electoral rolls.
In her written complaint to the police, Kumar's sister claimed that he was suspended after missing an official meeting on Sunday because he was busy with wedding preparations. She stated that her brother had been mentally unsettled since then.
She claimed that an official visited Kumar's home on Tuesday morning to inform him of his suspension. She stated, "My brother could not cope with the harassment from the officials." In the lead-up to the December 4 deadline, several states have reported deaths among officials involved in the special intensive revision of electoral rolls, with families asserting that work-related stress was a contributing factor.
