Mumbai: The Consulate General of South Africa observed International Nelson Mandela Day on July 18 with a morning of service and celebration at St Catherine of Siena School and Orphanage in Bandra, continuing an annual tradition of giving back to underprivileged children on the late statesman's birth anniversary.
Nelson Mandela Day is observed every year on July 18, the birthday of the anti-apartheid icon and former South African President. In November 2009, the United Nations formally declared the day an international observance in recognition of Mandela's lifelong sacrifices for freedom, equality and human dignity.
On this day, people around the world are encouraged to devote 67 minutes to community service — one minute for each of the 67 years Mandela dedicated to the struggle for his nation's freedom.
Staying true to that spirit, members of the Mission rolled up their sleeves and spent their 67 minutes cleaning classrooms and the library at St Catherine's, and supporting the institution with a donation of stationery and study materials for its students.
This year's visit went beyond service. The Mission felicitated students who topped their examinations at the SSC, FYJC, HSC and graduation levels, honouring their academic achievements and encouraging them to keep striving despite difficult circumstances.
In a gesture of gratitude, the management staff and support staff of the school were also felicitated for their tireless work and dedication towards building a better future for the orphanage's children.
The celebration concluded with a shared lunch hosted for the students, staff and visiting officials, bringing the morning of service to a warm and joyful close.
Speaking on the occasion, the Mission reaffirmed its commitment to carrying forward Mandela's legacy of compassion and service. The annual observance, which sees the Consulate visit a school or orphanage each year, reflects Mandela's enduring belief that education is "the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world."
For the children and staff of St Catherine of Siena School and Orphanage, the day was one of recognition, encouragement and community — a reminder that small acts of service, multiplied across many hands, can make a lasting difference.
