Pune: Tourism at the popular Vasota Fort, located in the heart of the Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary and Sahyadri Tiger Reserve, will be prohibited from December 30 to January 1. The move aims to protect the delicate ecosystem and prevent overcrowding in the core area during the holiday season.

Reason Behind the Ban

The Vasota Fort, situated in Satara district near Pune, is a major attraction for trekkers, nature lovers, and fort enthusiasts. The fort, set amidst a rich natural landscape, sees a surge in visitors, especially during holidays and the year-end period when many people seek outdoor adventures to bid farewell to the year.

Recognizing the potential threat to the wildlife and natural habitat due to the influx of visitors, the Forest Department has imposed a temporary ban on tourism to the fort. Forest Range Officer Vijay Bathe from the Bamnoli Forest Range stated that the closure is a precautionary measure to prevent harm to the biodiversity of the sanctuary’s core zone.

Enforcement Measures

Boating service providers operating in the Koyna backwaters have been instructed not to ferry tourists to the Vasota Fort during the restricted period. Furthermore, strict legal action will be taken against anyone found entering the Vasota Fort or the sanctuary illegally.

The Forest Department’s decision emphasizes the importance of balancing tourism and conservation, ensuring that the natural heritage of the Sahyadri Tiger Reserve remains intact for future generations.
