Pune, 12th June 2026: After entering the Kerala on June 4 within two days the southwest monsoon advanced to southern Maharashtra. But after that, its progress over state has slowed considerably, delaying the arrival of widespread rainfall.
While eastern and northeastern regions of the country is receiving steady rains, many parts of Maharashtra are still waiting for the monsoon to gain momentum.
The monsoon entered Kerala on June 4 and moved through several southern, eastern, and northeastern states over the following days. By June 11, it had covered most of eastern and northeastern India.
However, the Arabian Sea branch, which is responsible for bringing rains to Maharashtra, has shown limited progress in recent days.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), weather conditions remain favorable for further monsoon advancement across central and eastern India. In Maharashtra, however, the monsoon has stalled, affecting key regions including Mumbai and Pune.
Mumbai and Pune typically see the onset of the monsoon around June 11, but this year's arrival is delayed. Current forecasts indicate that widespread monsoon activity across Maharashtra may develop only during the second half of June.
Weather experts say the delay is being caused by dry air over western India and atmospheric conditions that are weakening the moisture-bearing monsoon winds. As a result, many parts of Maharashtra are likely to continue experiencing warm and relatively dry weather over the next several days.
Another factor slowing the monsoon is the absence of low-pressure systems, depressions, or cyclonic circulations over the region. These weather systems usually help draw moisture inland and support faster monsoon movement. Without them, the monsoon's advance into Maharashtra has remained sluggish.
Although isolated light showers may occur in some areas, residents across Mumbai, Pune, and other parts of the state may have to wait a little longer for consistent rainfall and relief from the heat.
The IMD expects monsoon activity to strengthen in the coming days, but the delayed progress over Maharashtra remains under close watch as farmers, businesses, and residents await the arrival of the rainy season.
