Pune, 21 June 2025: A concerning situation has come to light as 89 educational institutions across the country have failed to implement the anti-ragging regulations laid down by the University Grants Commission (UGC). Taking serious note of this negligence, the Commission has issued show-cause notices to these institutions and directed them to strengthen anti-ragging measures immediately.
Ragging is a punishable offence, and to curb it, the UGC has framed stringent regulations that every educational institution must follow. These include setting up dedicated anti-ragging committees and squads, spreading awareness through various media, and taking strict action against offenders. However, despite repeated instructions, many institutions have ignored these mandatory steps.
The Commission has now taken a tough stand and sent show-cause notices, demanding an explanation for the failure to comply with the regulations. The UGC has warned that institutions not adhering to the norms will face strict action, which may include withdrawal of affiliation or other penalties.
In Maharashtra, three reputed institutions, Spicer Adventist University in Pune, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mumbai, and Maharashtra State Skill University in Mumbai, are among those that have received the notices. The UGC has emphasized that institutions must ensure a safe and supportive environment for students, free from any kind of harassment.
Students and parents are reminded that help is available for anyone facing ragging.
