Pune, 26 December 2025: More than 92,000 voters in Pune have been restored to their original wards after the Pune Municipal Corporation carried out a large-scale correction exercise in the draft electoral roll ahead of the upcoming municipal elections.
The draft voters’ list, published by the Pune Municipal Corporation on November 20, triggered widespread complaints from citizens who claimed their names were wrongly shifted from one ward to another. The issue caused confusion and raised concerns over possible “voter shifting”.
Initially, civic officials stated that corrections could be made only if individual voters filed objections, as per Election Commission norms. However, as similar complaints surfaced from across Maharashtra, the Election Commission took suo-moto cognizance of the matter and issued special directives.
These instructions empowered municipal commissioners to act on general complaints and correct errors without waiting for individual submissions.
Following these directions, the PMC conducted a detailed review of nearly 65,000 complaints. Of these, around 43,000 cases were addressed suo-moto by the administration, while about 22,000 objections were formally filed by citizens. After scrutiny, 47,063 objections were accepted and 18,000 were rejected.
As a result, the ward allocation of 92,466 voters that had been changed erroneously was corrected through a supplementary electoral roll. The updated list has been approved by Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram.
Civic officials said the corrective process was undertaken to ensure voters are listed in their rightful wards and to improve clarity and transparency in the electoral process ahead of the civic polls.
