Pune, 24 June 2025: After several days of continuous rainfall, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has finally been able to speed up pothole filling and road repairs across the city. With the rain taking a short break, hot asphalt is now available from the municipal asphalt plant, enabling repair teams to work more efficiently in both central areas and suburbs.
The persistent heavy showers in recent weeks had worsened the condition of city roads, causing potholes and waterlogging in many areas. Although the PMC’s road department had begun maintenance work before the monsoon, early and intense rain washed away many pre-monsoon repairs. Blocked stormwater and drainage lines further aggravated the situation, leaving several key roads badly damaged.
According to Aniruddha Pawaskar, Head of the PMC Road Department, more than 3,331 potholes have already been repaired. The work gained momentum on Friday as the rain eased and hot asphalt could be supplied in larger quantities. Road maintenance vans and repair squads are now active across various parts of the city.
During the rainy season, getting hot asphalt is difficult, so the PMC has also been using alternative methods to fix roads:
Cold mix asphalt bags are being used to fill potholes when hot mix is not available.
Concrete and chemical concrete are applied at certain locations.
For larger potholes where asphalt or concrete do not work effectively, four-inch paver blocks are placed and topped with gravel, asphalt, or concrete for better stability.
Roads lacking proper stormwater drains, like the Katraj-Kondhwa stretch, have also seen repairs using paver blocks to prevent recurring potholes.
Patchwork is done wherever needed to ensure potholes are fully covered.
