Pune, 24th July 2026: Continuous heavy rainfall over the past few days, leading to a significant rise in water levels across the city's reservoirs. Khadakwasla Dam has reached its full storage capacity.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Alert for the ghat regions of Pune district. The city is expected to receive light to moderate rainfall over the next two days, with very heavy rain likely in the hilly catchment areas.
According to the dam storage report released at 6 am on July 24, the four reservoirs supplying water to Pune, Khadakwasla, Panshet, Varasgaon and Temghar, collectively hold 22.88 TMC of water, which is 78.49% of their total capacity. On the corresponding day last year, the combined storage stood at 23.60 TMC (80.98%).
Khadakwasla Dam is now completely full with 1.97 TMC of water. Panshet holds 8.76 TMC (82.29%), Varasgaon has 9.86 TMC (76.88%), while Temghar contains 2.29 TMC (61.68%).
Heavy rainfall continued across the dam catchment areas during the last 12 hours. Khadakwasla recorded 29 mm rainfall, Panshet 108 mm, Varasgaon 103 mm, and Temghar received the highest rainfall at 177 mm.
The rainfall resulted in a combined inflow of 2,316 MCFT into the four reservoirs. Since the beginning of the monsoon, 1.82 TMC of water has already been released through the Khadakwasla Dam spillway.
Notably, Khadakwasla's current storage is significantly higher than the levels recorded on the same date in previous years. The reservoir stood at 79.94% last year, compared with 49.72% in 2024, 51.67% in 2023, and 73.37% in 2022.
With inflows continuing to rise, the Khadakwasla Irrigation Division has increased the discharge into the Mutha River from 3,825 cusecs to 9,405 cusecs.
Officials have appealed to residents to avoid entering the riverbed or going close to the riverbanks, as the water release may increase further depending on rainfall in the catchment areas.
