Pune, 2nd October 2026: Commuters across Pune continue to face traffic congestion, particularly in areas where infrastructure projects are underway. To address the problem, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has undertaken several flyover, river bridge and connectivity ramp projects over the past two to three years.
With construction nearing completion at several locations, five projects are expected to become operational in the new year, providing additional routes for commuters.
The PMC is currently undertaking infrastructure projects in Koregaon Park, the Cantonment, Kalyani Nagar, Karvenagar, Baner and Ghorpadi. Construction has led to road closures and traffic diversions at several locations, forcing motorists to take longer routes. The completion of these projects is expected to improve connectivity and ease congestion in some of the city's busiest areas.
The new Sadhhu Vaswani Bridge, which connects the Cantonment area with Koregaon Park, Yerawada and Nagar Road, is nearing completion. The old bridge was demolished due to its deteriorating condition and replaced with a new structure. Although the PMC issued the work order in May 2023, technical difficulties delayed the project. Construction gained momentum in June 2024.
Work on installing the open-web girder is now in its final stage and is expected to be completed by December 2026. The bridge is likely to open to traffic in January 2027, improving connectivity between the eastern parts of Pune and the Cantonment area.
The PMC is developing a connectivity ramp linking the Pashan–Sus flyover with the service road along the Bengaluru Highway (NH-48). The ramp will provide improved access to the highway for vehicles travelling from Pashan and Sus towards Mumbai and Chandni Chowk.
The project, along with the service road included in the development plan, is expected to improve traffic movement in the area. The ramp is likely to become operational in the new year, subject to the completion of the remaining work.
The Karvenagar–Sun City Bridge over the Mutha River is expected to improve connectivity between Karvenagar and Sinhagad Road. The project is aimed at reducing congestion along Narveer Tanaji Malusare Road and in the surrounding areas.
The connecting road on the Karvenagar side has been completed, while construction of the approach road on the Sun City side is underway. The remaining work is expected to be completed by December 2026, with the bridge likely to open to traffic in January 2027. It will provide an additional route for commuters travelling between the two areas.
The Ghorpadi flyover, being constructed over the Miraj railway line, is another major infrastructure project nearing completion. The construction has been underway for nearly two to two-and-a-half years. Once completed, the flyover will help commuters avoid delays caused by the railway crossing.
Around 90 per cent of the project has been completed. The remaining work includes asphalting, painting, shifting utility lines and installing traffic signs.
These activities are expected to be completed by October or November 2026, and the flyover is likely to open to traffic in January 2027.
The flyover is expected to benefit commuters travelling between Ghorpadi, Mundhwa, Koregaon Park, Kharadi, the Cantonment and Pune Railway Station by providing an alternative route and reducing dependence on the railway crossing.
According to the PMC, four to five bridge, flyover and connectivity projects are expected to be completed by the end of December 2026 and opened to traffic in the new year. One additional bridge is scheduled for completion in March 2027.
Dinkar Gojare, head of the PMC's Special Projects Department, said, "The construction of four to five flyovers and bridges over rivers across Pune is expected to be completed by the end of December 2026. These projects will be opened to traffic in the new year, while one additional bridge is scheduled for completion in March 2027. The projects will help ease traffic congestion in different parts of the city."
The completion of these projects is expected to improve road connectivity and provide alternative routes for commuters. Their impact on congestion will depend on traffic movement and connectivity with the surrounding road network.
