Pune, 16 April 2026: City is experiencing an intense summer, with temperatures crossing 40°C in several parts of the city, leading to a rise in heat-related health issues.
According to the civic health department, more than 700 citizens have been treated for conditions such as dehydration, fatigue, dizziness, and skin problems over the past month. One case of heatstroke has also been reported.
Among the hottest areas, Lohegaon recorded a maximum temperature of 41.8°C, while Shivajinagar touched 39.7°C. Despite the recent spike, Pune had experienced its coolest first half of April in nearly a decade, with an average maximum temperature of 36.21°C.
Civic data shows that a total of 770 patients sought treatment across 19 municipal hospitals and maternity homes, along with 135 dispensaries. Common symptoms included dehydration, muscle cramps, rashes, fatigue, and dizziness.
In response, the Pune Municipal Corporation’s health department is strengthening its preparedness by planning special treatment facilities for critical patients and setting up cooling wards. Private hospitals have also been instructed to report serious cases promptly.
Officials have advised residents to avoid stepping out between 11 am and 4 pm, drink plenty of water, and wear light, loose clothing. Citizens are also urged to seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms related to heat stress.
“Heatstroke symptoms include a sharp rise in body temperature, headache, dizziness, nausea, and even unconsciousness. Dehydration caused by excessive sweating can lead to fatigue, muscle cramps, itching, rashes, and dry skin,” said Dr Shivaji Kolhe.
